FIS race suit certification is only required for U19 athletes and older, meaning competitors age 16 and up racing at FIS events, the NorAm Series, Europa Cup, or World Junior Championships.
Most junior racers under 16 do not need a certified suit. A standard GS race suit from any reputable brand is all that is required for club, regional, and most national-level junior competition.
The confusion comes from the phrase "FIS approved" on nearly every race suit on the market. Here is what the rules actually mean, who they apply to, and what your racer needs at their specific competition level.
FIS race suit rules cover U19 athletes and older competitors at these events:
According to U.S. Ski and Snowboard's competition suit guidelines, certification is not required at any national-level non-FIS competition. It is also not required for Entry League FIS races or U-FIS (junior FIS) events.
For most junior racers competing at the club, state, regional, or USSA national level, a certified suit is not required. If your racer is under 16 and competing in Vermont, New England, or at a USSA national event, they do not need an FIS-certified suit.
A race suit is FIS certified when it passes the air porosity test outlined in the FIS alpine equipment specifications and carries the printed conformity label on the lower left leg, just above the boot cuff. The label must be at least 30mm x 45mm, printed directly on the fabric, and non-removable.
If you are buying a suit that needs to be FIS legal, look for that label before purchase. A product description stating "FIS approved" without a visible printed label on the suit is insufficient.
Starting in the 2025-26 season, FIS introduced a separate rule for cut-resistant pants. This is not part of the race suit itself. It is a standalone undergarment requirement.
Cut-resistant pants are now mandatory for Level 0-1 competition: World Cup, World Championships, Olympic Winter Games, and Continental Cup events, including NorAm, Europa Cup, and World Junior Championships. They must meet a minimum 3-star FIS-DITF 2021 certification and cover from the hip to the boot cuff.
For junior racers competing below this level, cut-resistant pants are not required under current FIS or U.S. Ski and Snowboard rules. FIS issued a formal strong recommendation for all athletes at all levels, and some national federations outside the US are beginning to expand the requirement down into youth categories. For now, they are optional for club and regional junior racers in the United States.
Worth knowing about, especially as your racer advances in competition. Not a current requirement for most families reading this. While not required at the club level, we strongly recommend cut-resistant base layers as a safety measure against lacerations for younger athletes, especially for racers competing in speed events like SG and DH, even at younger ages.
Here is a direct guide by competition level:
For the large majority of junior racers competing at Killington and across the Northeast, the answer is simple: a well-fitted GS race suit from a brand that builds to FIS standards.
Most suits on the market today are manufactured to FIS specifications regardless of marketing language. If it carries the printed label, it is FIS legal. But at the club and regional level, that label is not a race requirement. What matters is fit, padding placement, and a suit that holds up through a full training and competition season.

No. FIS suit certification applies to U19 athletes (16 and up) racing at FIS, NorAm, Europa Cup, or World Junior Championship events. U14 and U16 racing at the club, state, and regional level does not require a certified suit.
Look for the printed conformity label on the lower left leg, just above the boot cuff. It should be at least 30mm x 45mm and printed directly on the fabric.
A thin, moisture-wicking base layer and a back protector. The base layer should be form-fitting so it does not add bulk under the suit. The race suit needs to fit correctly over both pieces, so always try the suit with the base layer and back protector on.
Not currently under FIS or U.S. Ski and Snowboard rules at the club and regional level. They are mandatory for Level 0-1 competition, which includes the NorAm, Europa Cup, and World Junior Championships. FIS strongly recommends them at all levels.
Yes. U-FIS and Entry League FIS races do not require suit certification. A standard, well-fitted GS race suit is sufficient for these events.
